After studying the mission History of India and East Asia, one has to ask the question, “after almost 300 hundred years of mission endeavor, why are not the great empires of India and China, and to a degree, Singapore and Malaysia, won for Christ? We are not questioning the commitment and love for these countries by earlier Missionaries, for no doubt their sacrifices and labors far exceed ours. It is perhaps their methods could be improved on. For centuries the Colonial missionary always took the lead and place of authority, thus leaving the national believers (their converts) in subordinate positions. This in todays Asian concept causes them to view Christianity as a Western Religion, or formerly, the White man’s God.
After spending many weeks with the late W.W. Patterson, he and his wife staying in our home in Singapore in 1969, from Bethel Temple, Seattle Washington, U.S.A, a veteran missionary to Indonesia. He shared with me the vision of the value and importance of training the National Pastor to take the lead and be in the forefront of spiritual authority and direction for their people. They had to take ownership of their National Church. Did this then place the foreign missionary into redundancy? Not at all, but rather to establish and support Bible Training Institutions for the purpose of raising up and training national leaders. In many cases even these training institutions are now nationalized and led by excellent Asian Bible Teachers.
It is therefore my burden and Vision to spend as much time as possible in these Training Colleges and Centers teaching and training up and coming national Pastors and Teachers. A verse of scripture, which hangs on a placard in my office is from II Timothy 2:2 “And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.” This verse has been my motivational text for many decades. For in this verse are seen four generations.
The first: The Apostle Paul, The second: Timothy. The third: Faithful men. The fourth: Others also. Thus the on going propagation of God’s word, both in evangelism and especially discipling the nations. May God grant us the health and strength to continue is this all important vital mission.
Luke 10:27 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself. NKJ
This is the scripture that undergirds all that I am, both as a person and in my ministry both in my intentions throughout my daily life and in my giving out. To know Him and to make Him known as my Lord and Saviour, closest Friend,
