THE FEASTS OF ISRAEL

Jehovah instructed the nation of Israel to hold three feasts per year throughout their generations, and as yet He has not rescinded this command. The details and step by step manner in which they were to hold these feasts is very clearly recorded in the Word of God and as with all of Israel’s interaction with Jehovah this subject of The Feasts of Israel likewise can and should be woven into the spiritual life of the Christian and The Church. This year I plan to study on this web site an in depth look into this subject but with a slight difference, each feast will be studied at the exact and appropriate date and time that Israel will be observing them, which will hopefully make them pertinent and meaningful to we Gentiles. The year 2014 and 2015 is showing some interesting factors prophetically, therefore I believe it is expedient that we understand this subject which is dear to God's heart.

The Lord God, Jehovah, Yahweh is very concerned about reminding us of our past present and future. From the very first generation until the last He is about reminding us of who He is and who we are. If He is not reminding us personally then He has sent prophets to remind us, or patterns, or as in this instance, Feasts.
APPOINTMENTS WITH THE LORD GOD.
God has an appointment to perform something on these specific days, therefore each year the people were to assemble themselves together at every feast, holding ceremonies either in their homes or the Temple. This is where they could celebrate and be taught both of the past and the coming future, likewise if we want to hear from God at this time then we have to be on His calendar. Jehovah has never cancelled this out, not for the natural Jew and neither for the spiritual Jew, for one was foretelling the other, it was an illustration, an object lesson you might say. Therefore what concerns we Gentiles during these days, we who have been saved by the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ? Keeping this appointment with the Lord God, for He wishes to perform something during these days both in us and beyond, both spiritual and historical. Both in Jewry and in the Christian which will affect not only ourselves personally but will touch the world.

THE JEWISH CALENDAR VS. THE GREGORIAN CALENDAR.
THE TWO JEWISH CALENDARS.
The civil calendar begins in the autumn, which is why the month of Tishri which commences the autumn feast and is in the 7th month, it is the New Year for the nation of Israel and is celebrated as such.
The month of…..
Tishri, which began the new year, which in our Gregorian calendar is October.
SACRED CALENDAR: (God’s Calendar)
From the birth of the nation of Israel, at the time they departed Egypt in Exodus this month became the first month of the year when the month of Abib became the first month, but it is always known as the Sacred calendar and runs simultaneously with the civil calendar. This is the calendar that concerns us as it is the calendar Jehovah uses.

The Feasts were also called
The very first reason and purpose of the creation of ‘lights’, (sun, moon, stars) were to be for signs. The next is they were to show seasons, but do not necessarily think here of winter, spring, summer, autumn, because the Hebrew word for season here is mow-ed, the same word used for ‘feasts’ in Lev 23. Therefore these lights are really to show the timing of His divine appointments for things were going to happen on those days. Appointments made by Jehovah and we were to keep those appointments.
Let us return to the Calendar. The Gregorian is the one we use which is based solely on the suns cycle. The Muslim calendar is based totally upon the moon. But the Biblical calendar, and remember God said “let them be for signs and times etc, indicating that God has His own Biblical calendar and this is where both the sun and the moon are used. By way of example in the Gregorian calendar to keep it up to date with the sun we have to add a leap day, Feb 29, every 4th year. On the Biblical calendar they have to add an entire month. A leap month, 7 X over a 19 year time period. This is because the months are based upon the moon but the years upon sun, but there is yet another meaning for the word ‘sign’ that is compelling.
Owth - which means ‘sign’, it also means ‘in the sense of appearing, or His appearing’. So the sun, moon, stars are plainly a signal for His appearing in association with ‘His predetermined, appointed time’.
Rev 13:8…slain from the foundation of the world….
This scripture is showing that in the heart of Jehovah, His Son was as a lamb already slain before the creation, and so Jehovah predetermined all the days, times and seasons, they always were, always have been and always will be. God predetermined the divinely appointed day, the when, the how, even the music that would be sung at His Son’s funeral. All the feasts were dress rehearsals for that fateful day on the very days in which they would occur. Thus the Spring Feasts that we are going to be studying first are God’s divine appointments for His Sons first coming. First Feast, First Coming.
Lev 23:2 These are My appointed festivals, the appointed festivals of the Lord, which you are to proclaim as sacred assemblies.
The Jewish Marriage is a picture of the marriage between the Lord Jesus Christ and His Bride. There are three stages in a Jewish Marriage.
Stage 1. This is when the Father makes payment (dowry) to purchase the girl for His son. This is seen in the Feast of Passover when Father God purchased us from the clutches of satan with the blood of His Son.
Stage 2. This is the time when a Covenant of Betrothal is made. The Feast of Pentecost is the time we remember and celebrate this covenant.
Stage 3: this stage is the Marriage Feast and is illustrated within the Feast of Tabernacles.
Is it possible that if we wish to fully enter into each of these stages then we need to embrace all that it means as seen in the Feasts which are dress rehearsals.
THIS FIRST FEAST IN THE FIRST MONTH
is to remind us of our own, personal experience of
That is, our salvation as related to our past, present and future where He will want to show us of the depth of our salvation and of its very foundations. Maybe we were saved because of fear, or maybe our salvation experience was quite casual in that the impact of all that our salvation means was lost to us. Why, there are so many differing reasons and ways that our initial act of salvation could look like. Therefore during these feast days this is where our thoughts are meant to be focused, to remember our salvation, the miracle of it and the wonder, to remember to be grateful and to treasure it, plus to allow the Lord to enlarge in us all that our salvation means. Our salvation is at the very root of our Christian life, if the foundation is weak or shaky then the structure which is built thereon will be in danger of crashing. Likewise this feast sets the scene for the entire year and all of the following feasts, be careless about this foundational feast and the structure of the coming year could be in some danger. We shall take time as individuals to allow the Lord to deepen our experience of salvation, where we set aside times of fasting, prayer and meditation to enable us to focus and so deepen our understanding of all that we have been saved from and into, and this will commence this year on 14th April right through until 22nd April. HOW GREAT A SALVATION. Jehovah set aside in the Jewish calendar eight (8) day for this. These feasts are an appointment that Jehovah has made with His people, just because we miss this appointment it does not mean that He will, we must not allow Lucifer or our flesh interfere or disenfranchise us
OUR GREAT SALVATION
As seen in Exodus 12
Ex 12:1- 14 Can I suggest that you read these 14 verses through, and then go through each verse once again together with the study. The purpose of this study is to parallel the original Passover with our salvation. To overlay one upon another.
Vs. 2 This feast of Passover was to mark the beginning of the year, this month which originally was the 7th month Tishri now became the 1st month, Ahab/Nissan, this was the birth of the religious calendar. Remember this is a dress rehearsal and it illustrates our salvation, our new birth. At Salvation we are ‘born again’ where indeed it is a new beginning.
Vs. 3-6 On the 10th of the month they were to take a lamb and keep it tied up outside the house for 4 days, then on the 4th day they were to kill the lamb. Another dress rehearsal for the Bible says that God’s Son was like a lamb slain from the foundation of the world. The Old Testament is 4,000 years old before Jesus came, lived and died, the Lamb of God. Remembering that the scriptures say that one day with the Lord is like a thousand years for us, this means that 4,000 years for us equals 4 days in the Lord’s calculations. Yes in eternity Jesus Gods only Son was committed in His heart to dying for mankind even those who as yet had not even been created, but were still a desire in the eternal heart of the Godhead.
Vs. 5 The lamb chosen by the Israelites was to be a male, perfect, no defect naturally because of whom it was to portray.
Vs. 7,13 Blood was to be taken from the slain lamb and painted on the sides and top of the doorway of the dwelling, and provided they all stayed within that dwelling they would be safe. Another dress rehearsal as the Blood of Jesus God’s Son at salvation and beyond is applied to our lives. When trouble sees the blood it will pass over us. Three sides that blood of the lamb was to cover, the two sides of the door and along the top, three, we are created body, soul and spirit, thus this is showing that the blood of Jesus saves the ‘whole’ man, body, soul and spirit.
Vs. 11 they were to consume the lamb clothed ready for a journey, whereas normally they would not eat dressed for a journey. Likewise our salvation launches us into a journey towards the Promised Land. As for the Israelites it was not going to be an easy stroll, departing Egypt, traversing the wilderness and then arrival at the Promised Land, there were going to be battles to fight, victories to win, a job to do. Likewise for us.
In Exodus God said that He was going to put the religious calendar in the spring.
Ex 12:2 this month is to be for you the first month, a beginning……
Lev 23:5,6 in the 14th day of the 1st month is the Lord’s Passover……
Whose Passover is it? Is it Israel’s Passover, the Jews Passover? No it is the Lord’s…’I will pass over you’.
Lev 23:10.11 ….bring a sheaf of the first fruits…wave it…after the Sabbath
This is the barley harvest, in the spring.
Numb 9:2,3…keep at his appointed season
This is why it cannot be done by the moon, such as the Muslim calendar for their holiday’s rotate therefore it would end up in every month of the year, but God wanted Passover to appear in spring, which is the beginning, the birth of the new year. . So that is why they have to go by the lunar and solar calendar.
….at evening, you shall keep it in His appointed season…
We do need to understand the Jewish rites and the ceremonies because unless we do see the Hebrew roots we will not understand what is happening in Jehovah’s plan because some of these things are not spelt out in the (English) Bible.
Ex 12:15 you shall put away leaven out of your houses….whoever eats leaven bread from – till – shall be cut off
Ex 13:7 unleavened bread eaten 7 days…no leavened bread even to be seen with you, not in your neighborhood or even coasts.
No electricity back then, their houses would be dark at sunset, but several days before Passover mother would be intent on getting all of the leaven out of the house. To get the children excited about it, because what child enjoys the cleaning process, and yet parents were told to teach it to the next generation, she would purposely hide some leaven. Father would take a candle, then one child would take a big wooden spoon, and another child would be carrying a feather, and yet another child would take a white linen cloth. Now they would go on this fun family treasure hunt looking for the leaven. The father is taking the candle, searching for leaven in the house. When the children find the leaven, they would call out, “daddy, daddy there is leaven in our house”. The first thing he would say to them is “don’t touch it”, setting the light down he would then take the feather and the wooden spoon and scoop up the leaven. Now, taking the wooden spoon and the feather he would wrap them in the white linen cloth, tie a red sash around it all, and together with the candle take it all outside to a community bonfire
What does this mean for us today? Firstly each year it is yet another dress rehearsal for the finale. Each year the Lord is going to keep His appointment to meet with them/us. This first feast is to deal with the leaven. In all reality this means that each year as we embrace our salvation in a deeper way, this GREAT SALVATION, so more leaven in our lives will be dealt with. Jesus is our Salvation, His is a full and a complete salvation, once and for all, it is we who need a greater and more revealing revelation to enable us to walk in a fuller truth, where all that He has accomplished touches us, where as we understand and embrace all that this means so we move further into all that He has bought for us there at Calvary.
Note: He has created us to be visual people therefore we need to see visually. Interestingly this is probably why He gives us visions and dreams, for we need pictures. Incidentally it is possibly also why He spoke in parables.
1 Pet. 1:6-9 In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials. That the genuineness of your faith being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honour and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ, whom having not seen you love. Though now you do not see Him yet believing you rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, receiving the end of your faith, the salvation of your souls
Yes the salvation of your souls is still continuing, and during this feast the Lord keeps an appointment with us during which some deep inner work and change will be continued. The end result must always be more intense love and adoration for Him, Creator, Saviour, Lord, there is always more.
THE SPRING FEASTS OF THE MESSIAH

Lev23:2 ….Feasts of the Lord…
Therefore we have discovered that the feasts are an appointment made by the Lord to meet with us , where He is presenting us with a time and a place and the manner in which to meet with Him. Perhaps most importantly it is to be a time of preparation. A bride spent her time preparing herself both outwardly and inward for that moment, cleansing, washing, anointing, finally being clothed in her wedding garment. It all takes time and much detail.
Note: He is coming for me/you as an individual, not only the Church as an institution, for individuals make up the Church.
The New Testament parallel is found in….
Matt 22:2-5 …to call them that were bidden to the wedding, they would not come….….they made light of it.
There is a concern for the church today when they make light of the festivals, which can seem to be the case, for in many churches these Feasts of the Lord are not even considered. Not only the feasts are neglected, the preparation is minimized and even belittled.
As seen throughout the scriptures.
Now we need to tie these customs into the scriptures, and the Hebrew interpretation is as follows by using scriptures….
Ps 119:105…thy word is a lamp to my feet…..
Your heavenly Father has a light, the word, and He is searching your house, to see if there is any leaven in your house.
Ps 91:4 He shall cover you with His feathers….
The feather speaks of the Holy Spirit, taking your sin and gently scooping it up
Deut 21:21,22….for He that is hanged is accursed of God…
The tree that Messiah hung upon is represented by the wooden spoon. The Lord says, do not touch your sin, let the Holy Spirit gently put your sin upon the cross, then just as Messiah was wrapped in linen and laid in the tomb, so they wrap everything in linen.
2 Cor 5:21 He made Him to be cursed for us.
Then it is taken outside of the camp where it is burned.
2 Cor 5:21 for He has made Him sin, who knew no sin
Mk 15:46 wrapped in a linen cloth in the tomb
Heb 13:13 taken outside of the camp and burned
These are the rehearsals that they were doing each year at this time, for thousands of years before Messiah ever came.
Interesting parallels seen in the life of Jesus the Messiah.
Another interesting parallel is the month Messiah drove everyone out of the Temple….
John 2:13-15 now the Passover of the Jews was at hand,….. and Jesus drove the money changers out of the Temple
We see the search for leaven begins in His Father’s house where He is helping His Father clean His house before the Days of Unleavened Bread and this is another dress rehearsal. But why was it so important that there be no leaven in the house? If there is leaven in your house you would be cut off from Israel. (you might say, “Oh but there is an open heaven and I can come at any time”. True, but is it this way this time, because it is an appointment that God keeps with us, it is easier and more ‘in depth’, because of our honouring God’s timing? This is our understanding things from the Hebrew mindset, as opposed to the Greek understanding, and if you have followed my study on Hebrew Roots then you will see the importance of doing just that.
1 Cor 3:16,17 you are the Temple of…
1 Cor 5:1,2 …leaven in the church…fornication, puffed up, …
So during Passover we need to be concentrating on getting the leaven out of our house.
1 Cor 5:7,8..purge out the old leaven….keep the feast
So in the early church they did not cease keeping Passover. Here we see the apostle Paul commanding them to do so.
The dress rehearsal continues by way of a fulfillment seen in the life of Jesus Son of God.
John 12:1,2 they come to Bethany…
Passover is on the 14th day of the month, six days before they arrived in Bethany thus making their arrival in Bethany on the 8th of the month.
John 12:9-10…..the chief priests made plans to kill Lazarus as well (as well as Jesus)
This is on the 9th, going into the 10th
12 :12-15 on the next day….
This ‘next day’ is the 10th of Nissan when the people took palm branches.
Vs 13, what they are singing comes from the Great Hallel, Ps 113 – 118
Ps 118:24- 26 this is the day the Lord has made, ….save now I pray…blessed is He that comes in the name of the Lord.
On this day, once they were in Jerusalem, the eastern gate of the Temple is opened up. The High Priest with his assistants which numbered hundreds of priests, march out of the city and go to the city of Bethlehem where there a perfect lamb is selected and led back into the city. The entire way to the city the road is lined with thousands of pilgrims, singing as the lamb is led down the road. Ps.113-118. The priests bring the lamb to the northern side of the Temple, through the sheep gate, but at the same time the Messiah is coming through the eastern gate. Here is this big collision course coming into the Temple, two parties singing the same song. It’s a dress rehearsal.
The lamb is taken into the Temple and put in a prominent place on display where for 4 days they would inspect this lamb giving themselves time to find fault, for it had to be without spot or blemish. At the same time they are examining Jesus the Lamb of God.
Mk 12:13 they sent certain Pharisees to catch Him in His words…
Matt26:59,60 …they sought false witnesses to put Him to death, but found none…
Luke 23:13-15 …I have examined Him and find no fault…
This is a dress rehearsal where it needs to become more than another bible study, instead we are called to walk and live in the truth of it. May we keep God’s appointment with us and allow Him to walk with us searching out any hidden and unconfessed sin in our life. This is all to prepare us for His Presence.
TIMETABLE OF THE CRUCIFIXION:
Wednesday 3 pm crucifixion, buried before 6pm when the Passover commenced.
Thursday (commencing 6pm previous day to 6 pm this day) day one Jesus in the grave. High Sabbath. This is where the discrepancy has come within the Church, that particular Thursday was the commencement of the Passover there fore it was a High Sabbath, which means that this particular week there were two Sabbaths, the Thursday and the Saturday. He could not have been crucified on the Friday because that does not leave 3 days and nights for Him to be in the grave.
Friday (6 pm commencing previous day to 6 pm this day) day two Jesus in the grave.
Saturday (commencing 6 pm previous day to 6 pm this day) day three Jesus in the grave. This day is a Sabbath.
Sunday (commencing 6 pm previous day to 6pm this day. He arose sometime after 6 pm previous day, for this is the first day of the week.
THE FEAST OF UNLEAVENED BREAD
Exodus 12: 6pm in the evening they killed the Passover Lamb and ate it during the night dressed for a journey. During that night anyone not inside a house painted outside with blood from the lamb, the 1st born was killed by the angel of death.
During the night Pharoah sent for Moses and released the Israelites to go and worship their God.
They took their dough before any yeast had been added. Vs 34.
They journeyed from Ramses to Sukkoth
Mk 15:21,25…at the 3rd hour they crucified Him…
Why is it significant about the 3rd hour, because that is 9 in the morning which is the time of the morning sacrifice. At the very same moment they are binding the Passover Lamb to the horns of the altar they are binding Yeshua to the cross. At the same time they are singing Hallel
Ps 118:27…bind the sacrifice with cords to the altar
At the very same time of the morning sacrifice.
Mk 14:26 they went out singing a hymn
They had sung this song for thousands of years Ps 113-118
So the last words were 118 at that last Seder service, before He was rejected.
Ps 118:21-23…You have become my salvation. The stone which the builders rejected…
Matt 27:45-47 now about the 6th hour, darkness until 9th hour.
6th hour is noon, the time of an hour of prayer. Same as 9th hour an hour of prayer, each time they sing through the Hallel.
At the time of the evening sacrifice, 3pm which is the 9th hour, the high priest ascends and lays the knife to the throat of the lamb, and spoke the words “Niagma”, at that very same time Jesus, God’s Son is crying out “Niagma”, this is Hebrew for “it is finished”, and at the same time they are singing
Ps 118:14,…the Lord has become my Yeshua/salvation
Vs 15-17 ..the right hand of the Lord (Jesus) does valiantly
The right hand (Jesus) of the Lord is lifted up
I shall not die, but live.
The Jewish historian, Josephus, said that they killed 250,000 lambs in one day for there were 2 ½ million Jews in Jerusalem for the feast, all bringing their sacrifice to the Temple.
The temple was up on a hill, south would go down to the Hinnon Valley, which was also known as ‘the valley of blood’. Between the Temple Mount and the Mount of Olives is the Kidron Valley, The Tyropean Valley runs right behind the Temple Mount, but that has been filled up now. The Dung Gate is where the refuse of the city leaves, one way or another, down the south hill, into the valley of blood. Underneath the Temple Mount they have these gigantic cisterns that held 10,000 gallons of water. So the blood would flow into these channel, then they would release gallons of water that would flush all that blood and water, down the right side of the Temple Mount, into the valley of blood, so you could see this river of water and blood flowing.
At the same time the blood and water was flowing from the Sons side, a river of blood and water could be seen flowing from the Fathers right side (the Temple). The Veil in the Temple was likened to a garment. When Jacob died it says they would rend their garments, showing their heartbreak. It is a ritual named Keriah - mourning ritual. In the Temple the Father rends His garments as the veil is torn top to bottom, symbolically illustrating His mourning and His heartbreak, over the death of His Son.
The 15th day of the month now begins The Feast of Unleavened Bread.
Lev. 23:4 These are the Lord’s appointed feasts
Vs. 5 The Lords Passover begins at twilight (6 pm) on the 14th day of the first month.
Vs. 6 On the 15th day of the 1st month the Lord’s Feast of Unleavened Bread begins, for 7 days you must eat bread made without yeast.
When the Israelites came into the Promised Land they were to in- cooperate the Feast of Unleavened Bread, which they could not celebrate there in the wilderness.
Lev 23:10,11 when you come into the land…you shall reap the harvest….and you shall bring a sheaf of the first fruits…you shall wave the sheaf…
So during the Passover week, on the morning after the Sabbath they would wave the sheaf, the first fruits of the barley harvest before the Lord.
Hebrew – sheaf = omer – but a sheaf can also represent a person, and sheaves can represent people.
Ps 122:6 they shall come rejoicing bringing their sheaves with them.
Matt 28:1….in the end of the Sabbath….
Yeshua rose on the feast of first fruits becoming the first of the barley harvest, another dress rehearsal
1 Cor 15:20…He has become the first fruits of…
Acts 26:23…first of those who…
They had to bring their best of the first fruits to the Temple even as The Father brought His best. That is why the Lord said to Mary Magdalene at the garden tomb “do not touch me, I have not yet ascended…I first have to go up to heaven and become the first fruits offering on the Feast of First Fruits”. It had to be representative of the whole harvest, serving as a pledge that the rest of the harvest would be realized. Because we know that Yeshua was the first and the best and He rose, that gives us confidence that we also will rise.
Ex. 14, 15,
This was a dress rehearsal for on this day that Jesus rose from the dead in the Temple they waved a sheaf of barley before the Lord. Jesus rose on the same date that the Israelites came out of the Red Sea and Pharoah was destroyed, where the nation of Israel arrived at Red Sea, went into the sea, came up out of the sea, before that satan owned them, likewise satan owned us before the Lord Jesus dies and rose again. Jesus is the first fruits of those that rise from the dead and receive a new body. Romans 6 explains this very well when it talks about us dying with Christ, then being buried (water baptism) and then rising to walk in newness of life. To follow the illustration the part that is not dead and buried satan still has access to, owns as it were.
Dress rehearsals throughout the Jewish history:
On this day that Jesus rose, Haman in the Book of Esther was hung another dress rehearsal.
Also on this date the ark rested on Ararat and 8 people knew they were saved. Each of them are dress rehearsals, a Midrash.

Gen 1:14 Let there be lights in the sky..…for SIGNS, seasons, and days ….
NASA has declared that on April 15th 2014 the new moon will turn blood red, which means that there will be a total lunar eclipse.
Essentially, blood moons are total lunar eclipses.during the five millennium period from 2000 BC to 3000 AD, we will experience 12,064 of one of the three types of lunar eclipses, averaging about 2.4 per year. Over a period of 5,000 years—from 1999 BC to AD 3000—there will be a total of 3,479 total lunar eclipses. Four consecutive total lunar eclipses, without any partial eclipses in between, are known as a tetrad”.
The significance of lunar eclipses is noted in “the Babylonian Talmud, written almost two thousand years ago, and it records in Jewish thinking that whenever the sun is in total eclipse, it is a bad omen for the nations”
This phenomenon cannot be seen with the naked eye, but more specifically it is not the first time the moon has turned red. NASA has on record dates from history when the moon turned blood red, but significantly there were no lunar eclipses in the 1600s, 1700s neither the 1800s, but they have increased in the 19 and 2000s, in this study though we are interested in any dates which may have fallen on a Jewish Feast day, for this sign for Israel has turned out to be one of specific warnings to the nation, God’s people. Dates such as 1493 when the Jews were expelled from Spain for example, at that time the moon turned blood red as a SIGN or a warning, or 1949/50 at the time the Jews were given a homeland for the first time in thousands of years, again another blood red moon on a feast day. Then again 1967/68 linked to the Six Day War, each time another blood red moon fell during a feast. Which brings us to the present time, for on the next 2 Jewish Passovers which will fall on April 15, 2014 and April 4, 2015, and again on the Feast of Tabernacles Oct, 2014 and Sept 28, 2015 there will be blood red moons, 4 in total. Actually there have only been 4 blood red moons in the last 500 years and yet there are 4 over these next 2 years. Yet another vital thing to factor in is that 20115 is a Jubilee year. This is way beyond just being coincidental. It is a SIGN to Israel and the Jews that on the days when Jehovah is keeping His appointment with them, significant events are about to occur. Not only that though there will also be 2 solar eclipses in 2015, the 1st falls on 1st Nissan which is the commencement of a new year on God’s calendar, which makes it 2 weeks before Passover when there will be a blood red moon. Besides this there will be another solar eclipse on the feast Rosh Hoshana.
The Lord of Creation is both warning and preparing His people both Jew and Christian, and in fact the world, that these appointments are hugely significant.
Joel 2:31 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the LORD comes. (Acts 2)
To reassure us remember that astrology is all about us and this we want nothing to do with for it is suspect, but not so astronomy for this is all about God our Creator. We are not to set dates but the Lord has put before us patterns, sequences, links you might say, or jig saw pieces to a puzzle.
The writer of the Psalms frequently expresses that ‘the heavens declare’ ….which means the heavens announce, as though by word of mouth, to one who is present, to rehearse out the events that will happen on earth.
Let us follow in the steps of the Sons of Issacher who the Bible records ‘were men who understood the times and knew what Israel should do’.

Old Testament Beginnings:
FROM PASSOVER TO PENECOST
(From this day count 7 sabbaths, and 50 days, for Pentecost)

In the Old Testament this Feast goes by the name Feast of Weeks in Lev. 23:17-21
Feast of Weeks/Pentecost/Shavot always falls on a Sabbath.
The feast includes loaves baked with leaven + animal sacrifice.
ISRAEL IN THE WILDERNESS. The very first Feast of Weeks/Shavot.
From the time the Jews left Egypt to when they arrived in the Sinai desert and camped opposite Mt Sinai took them 49 days. Although some say it took three months those numbers do not tally with 50 day after Passover. Moses then gave the Jews two days to cleanse themselves, wash their clothes, and prepare to receive the Torah on the third day. At the same time Moses told them not to come too near the Mount.
From early morning dense clouds covered the peak of the mountain. Thunder and lightning were frequently seen and heard. The sound of the shofar came louder and stronger, and the top of the mountain was enveloped in fire and smoke. Jehovah is moving closer down on mountain. The Israelites at the foot of the mountain stood in great awe. Ex. 19:20-25; 20:1-21.
In the Jewish Mishna, and supported by the Hebrew language, on that day the shofar, which is the trumpet of God, became louder and louder and louder as God began to speak and give His Torah. In the Hebrew language it says that the voices of God began to speak. The Mishna says that ‘He displayed untold marvels to Israel with His voice. Ex 20:15 says it thundered. Moshe Wiseman said “they not only heard God’s voice but they saw the sound waves, it was a fiery substance.”
After this very first Feast of Weeks Jehovah taught them the detailed meaning of this feast……
Lev 23:15,16 ….and you shall count 7 Sabbaths….50 days
This time it was the wheat harvest, and this time they had to count the omer, in this case it was 50 days, and it took place at night as the new day begins at sundown, 6 p.m. some people recite Psalm 67 after the counting. But why count the omer? Counting in anticipation of any exciting event is quite understandable, and God wanted us to be excited about these festivals, therefore He wanted us to count, a countdown to and exciting meeting with Yahweh..
Deut 16:16….3 X in a year your males shall appear….for the feasts.
Numb 28:26 in the day of the first fruits, after your weeks be out, you shall have a holy convocation. (That is talking about Shavuot/Pentecost for it was another dress rehearsal)
You are to bring out of your habitation two wave loaves, baked with leaven, they are the first fruits (This is the first fruits of the wheat harvest.)
Lev 23:21….a holy convocation…. (Again, this is a dress rehearsal in preparation for the time of the Lord of the Passover and Pentecost.)
New Testament Fulfillment:
When you think of all the appearances of the Lord through to Shuvuot, those all happened on the days of the counting of the omer. The most significant day people remember is the 40th day because that is when He ascended.
Luke 24:49-53 He said wait in Jerusalem…. Then He lifted up His hands and blessed them…. And they continued in the Temple….
They did not forsake the Temple, they continued following the feasts and festivals. Lifting up His hands refers to Numbers 6, where the priest would always lift His hands and form the letter sheen (two fingers X two fingers, making a V in the middle) and he would say the Aaronic benediction. But Yeshua was not from the tribe of Levi, so He is not supposed to do the Aaronic Benediction, He is from the tribe of Judah. When He goes to bless them, typically they would have been looking up at Him, and when He raised His hands they would have seen His nailed hands. But the first thing they do whenever the priest blesses them is they look down, because they think the power of God is coming through that blessing. But when they looked down they would have seen his nailed feet. Then suddenly He starts ascending as they are looking at His feet He starts going up.
Acts 2:1-5 when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord, in one place
There were Jews there from every nation under heaven.
Why were they there in Jerusalem at that time? Because Deut 16:16 says they were required to be there. This was not something new for the Jews, this was their norm, repeated every year.
Acts 2:2,3 suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a mighty rushing wind and it filled the house where they were sitting….cloven tongues of fire
Acts 2:15….third hour (This is the time of the morning sacrifice, 9 a.m.)
Here we have another completion of a previous dress rehearsal, on the day of the Feast of Shavuot at the time of the morning sacrifice you have the Holy Spirit poured out.
Acts 21:20 tens of thousands of Jews were saved….and they were all zealous for Torah
So it was not Gentiles that were coming to Messiah, these were Jews. They loved Torah, which meant that they kept the feasts etc. What were they reading when the first Pentecost happened?
Literally every Shavuot the Jews stay up all night where they read sections of the Torah. The very first Shavuot was when Moses went up the mount and received the Torah, and so they read Ex 19 regarding that event. Therefore that night in Jerusalem, before the outpouring happened, they are reading how the Lord came down on Mt Sinai in fire
Ex 19:16 it came to pass on the 3rd day, in the morning.
It was probably about the time of the morning sacrifice they heard this voice, it was like the shofar sounding, long and growing louder, and the Lord descended in fire.
They also read Ezekiel, therefore on this night before the fire fell on the Temple, they read Ezek.1
Ezek 1:4…whirlwind, …fire…cloud…
Ezek 3:12,13….a great rushing sound…wings…
Again we are observing a dress rehearsal year after year. They also read the book of Ruth, each and every Shavuot they read the Book of Ruth.
Ru 2:23…she gleaned until the end of the barley harvest and the wheat harvest.
This means that Ruth began at the time of Passover and worked right through until Pentecost, 50 days later. Ruth was a Gentile, representing the church that marries into Israel, Gentiles coming into the covenant of Israel. Ruth’s name means ‘friend’, she becomes a friend of Naomi. Ruth and Orpah represent the last day church, the Gentile church, where half of the church will befriend Israel, work the harvest and bring forth the Messiah, whilst the other half will turn their back on Israel and go back to their gods.
Old Testament Romance:
The darkness of this nation of idols ate into them more each interminable day. Eking away the light. Each successive generation understanding less the Egypt that Joseph had known. Egypt, a nation given over to idols, until the darkness was tangible. A darkness that suffocated the mind and senses, together with the accompanying filth and disease. 80% of the peasants sick from disease spread by the snails which inhabited the irrigation channels. The life-giving water from the Nile, bringing death as it flowed across the dry barren land. Locked into slavery and beyond any help from Yahweh, life became even more bitter when husbands and sons were snatched away to work in the mines. Never to be seen again.
Moses steps into this insanity, initially his presence and commissioning unknown by his people. for this first part of the drama was initially only between himself and Pharoah. Occasionally the Israelites were caught up in the melee such as when the plagues spilled over into Goshen, but on the whole it was life as usual. But then they went through a very strange period when their Egyptian masters and mistresses began to present them with gifts. Gifts of gold, silver, good quality materials, even more unexpected were the precious stones. What does a slave do with such things? Initially they suspected a trap, waiting daily for a knock on the door by the law keepers, coming to search out and make arrests. Instead there was Moses, with an even stranger demand. Purchase a lamb, keep the lamb, tied for 4 days, then kill it and eat it, dressed for a journey. For Moses had procured their release sufficient for a 3 day journey to worship Yahweh.
It is doubtful that everyone was pleased with this news. Moses was often faced with stubbornness, refusal to participate, valid reasons why they couldn’t make the journey. Why they couldn’t eat lamb, they couldn’t walk the distance, fearful of leaving their security miserable as it was. The prospect of being responsible for 3 million people with their needs and complaints must have been daunting to say the least for Moses. How do you persuade 3 million people to assemble and walk, keeping in an orderly fashion, but he did. Poor Moses, now suddenly they have their path blocked by a massive river and to make things worse it was in flood. What is more to the rear of them the dust of the Egyptian army, 600 chariots plus, plus, coming ever closer. “Oh Yahweh, if you have ever spoken to me before, and it wasn’t my imagination all along, speak now, show Your hand now, cried Moses”. It’s not an easy matter to hear the Lords voice, He speaks very quietly. Now with the clamour of 3 million people, the roaring of the water and the impossible situation, which seemed to go from bad to worse moment by moment, “what was that Yahweh, did You say stretch out my rod over the water?” He did, and the waters parted, heaped up like boiling walls of water either side of an open pathway, through to the opposite bank. The scene has changed, but not the people, now they are clambering down the bank and rushing headlong for the far side. Now how do you control terrified people?
Safely up on the opposite bank they saw that the army to were down into the river, racing along the path that they had recently trod. Imagine the stunned silence for a moment when those walls of water folded back inwards upon themselves, with the Egyptian horses and their riders disappearing into the turbulent water. Cheers erupted, they danced, clapped, sang, congratulated each other, giving glory to Yahweh, and maybe spared Moses a word or two of thanks. But euphoria quickly turned to nervousness as they realized that any chance of returning to Egypt was forever snatched from them.13:17 Now there was no other choice but follow this man who was constantly trying to reassure them that he knew this country, for he had lived there for 40 years. And so they began to walk and walk and walk. First the water and then the food ran out, and the situation became dire. Each time, Yahweh showed His hand, supplying water, then bread and even meat. Day after day another lesson learned another opportunity to trust in the hand of Yahweh. From grumbling and complaining and fear, to provision followed by thanks. Again and again, round in circles. The lessons learned, failed, relearned.
At a place named Marah, named for its bitter waters, the Bible does not SAY that they drank the water. 15:22, but Hebrew records infer this to be so. Let us imagine for a moment that they did. Imagining that they were so thirsty, they did not know the geography of this region, there was water, why not drink. This water, to this day is undrinkable owing to its high content of calcium and magnesium. Moses, knew this area well, presumably he had warned the people not to drink from this body of water. Not for nothing was it named Bitter Lakes. But, can you imagine, once the people saw water there would be no stopping them. They would drink thirstily, deaf to Moses cries of caution, until their drinking turned to violent vomiting. Now 3 million people are writhing in agony. (I am taking liberties here, knowing human nature and understanding the content of the water). The water was rich in calcium and magnesium, and calcium in such quantities causes vomiting and dysentery, clear water, but thick with calcium and magnesium making it bitter. There is an expression ‘one teaspoon of this water and you have dysentery for a week’, purging that would rid their bodies of the diseases of Egypt. Besides this calcium and magnesium is used by professional athletes to control muscle spasm. Now, bodies cleansed and bodies fortified for the long desert journey, the discomfort of this experience would have been invaluable, God provided benefits, even mercies.
After 3 months 19:1 they arrived at the foot of Mt Sinai, and made camp. And Moses was called up the mountain by Yahweh, 19:3.
Ex. 19:4 you have seen what I did for you, and what I did to the Egyptians, how I bore you on eagles wings, how I brought you to Myself…..(this is what God did for them)
In their thinking they had walked all the way, but Yahweh saw it differently. He had carried them to the heights away from the sordid garbage dump where vultures feed, to where eagles soared, high up to safety and solitude where they could see the big picture. Jehovah carried them on eagles wings and supernaturally fed them.
Ex. 19:5 if you will obey My voice, if you keep My commandments, you will become a special treasure, you will become a kingdom of priests (this is what they were to do)
Their response was “We will”! Vs. 8 they accepted the terms, and accepted the covenant.
Next step was vs. 10 they were to consecrate themselves, set themselves apart. They were vs. 14,15 not come near wives, wash their clothes, and vs. 11 be ready on 3rd day. WHY?
Vs 20 in 3 days He was to bring to them the wedding contract, for the Ten Commandments are not a condition of God’s love, instead it was to prove that He loved me. In fact He was asking them to marry Him.
In a Hebrew wedding the two families would agree between themselves on a marriage contract.
If either party broke any part of this contract this gave them reasons for divorce. Therefore rather than naming these ten commandments as such, it would be more correct to name it a betrothal/marriage contract. Jehovah handing them the tablets upon which were written Ten Commandments is a proof of His love for them and His proposal of marriage. Look at each one of them closely writing them in our terminology, what Jehovah is saying are the very things we would want said at our engagement.
Matt 22:37-40 Jesus said to him “you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it, you shall love your neighbour as yourself”.
The above verse in a nutshell is how the Lord Jesus Christ abbreviated the Ten Commandments.
Of course we might answer “I don’t know what you mean, of course I love the Lord, He is my friend”. My response would be in return “If my boyfriend/partner loved me (or me him for that matter) the way we often love the Lord I would not see the point of continuing in the farce. I am specifically thinking of the way we spend 5 minutes out of 24 hours with Him in a meaningful, focused, quality time. Where we are both heard, where both needs and desires are met. Talking face to face and heart to heart, where I feel His breath on my face, where to be focused upon Him and delighting in Him is the highlight of the day. food for thought?!
Ex. 20:18-19 the people witnessed the thundering, the lightning flashes, the sound of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking….
But what is happening, and how would we relate to this in our language and culture? The voices for example what would they be saying? “Will you marry Me, will you become betrothed to Me, will you be mine only?” is what the voice is saying. In Hebrew culture as in any culture when you propose then there is expected to be a response, and initially they responded favourably by saying ‘yes, we will”, until things got really scary that is. Now the people do not respond to Jehovah but speak instead to Moses by saying “do not let Jehovah speak to us unless we die, you speak to Him on our behalf and relay to us what He requires”. How did Yaweh respond to this response of their? He responded by giving them The Tabernacle to show them how to come to Him in a safe and non-threatening manner.
Is there any proof that this is exactly what was happening there at the base of Mt. Sinai? The prophet Jeremiah makes it clear to my thinking.
Jeremiah 2:2 Go and cry in the hearing of Jerusalem saying thus says the Lord “I remember you the kindness of your youth the love of your betrothal when you went after me in the wilderness”.
When was the time of youth for the nation of Israel? When they departed Egypt and were on the way to the Promised Land, when they were in the wilderness. Here is Jehovah 1,000 years after Sinai where He is wishing to remind Israel of those times, of exactly what was happening there in that place, He was betrothing them as a bride.
750 years B.C. Hosea the prophet was the first person, prophet in the O.T. to declare the revelation of the bride of Christ in an open way. He makes this startling proclamation, the first one to make it, it must have seemed like scandalous doctrine, like heresy to the people of God when he said it. He spoke of a relationship so intimate to God, so entirely foreign to anything the prophets had ever told the people of God.
Hosea 2:14-23 therefore I will allure her, I will bring her into the wilderness and speak comfort to her....and you will call Me your husband, and no longer my Master.
Then Isaiah comes just after Hosea and he is saying…
Isai 9:6 you will call Him wonderful
New Teastament Romance:
One of the most beautiful images pf Shavuot (Pentecost) is that of the marriage between Jehovah (the groom) and Israel (the bride). In the Biblical wedding service that Jehovah gave, marriage consisted of two stages. The first stage is the betrothal which one enters immediately upon the signing of the betrothal contract between the two parties, this written contract is called a ketubah. During betrothal you are legally married, but do not enter into physical contact. Betrothal is so legally binding that you cannot break it without a divorce.
Remember the Hebrews read the Bible using the method of midrash, where one truth explodes into another and another, the revelation becoming greater and clearer as it expands. In this way, keeping clearly in mind what happened to this young nation of Israel as they camped at the foot of Mt Sinai let us move on in history to another new beginning, this time it is the new church, which was birthed during the Hebrew feast of Pentecost. The resurrected Christ is seen for 40 days, and then prior to Him finally departing He tells them to do nothing except wait in Jerusalem, and in the upper room until they receive power.
Day after day they wait, but for how long they were not told. Each day they expected power to arrive, but how would it look when it did, again they did not know even though I expect they speculated on this, we humans do this. Day after long day and then night after night, and during that time I can imagine them constantly questioning each other. “Has it happened yet, do you feel any different”? Life went on and they would have needed to eat, to market, to prepare food, to bathe even to sleep, and still the question was on their lips, “has anything happened yet”? then one day they were assembled together, in one accord, in prayer and supplication as the Bible expresses it, about 120 of them, and the day had arrived. But my question is what day? Was it a specific day, was Jehovah waiting for something specific, surely it wasn’t waiting just for the sake of waiting. No, they were waiting for the right date. They didn’t know this is what was happening, they didn’t know how long they were to wait, or what they were waiting for, or what, if anything, was to happen, or even if they would recognize it when it did happen. They might even have thought that Peter organizing the voting in of a replacement for Judas was the power. Instead they were in fact waiting for a date on the calendar. Yes the day of Pentecost fell on the same date that the nation of Israel had stood those many years prior at the foot of Mt. Sinai, when Jehovah had descended to ask them to become betrothed to Him. Now it is another new beginning and this time the Gentiles are included, but that is all that is new, for it is still about a wedding. And yes, the ground probably shook, there were certainly voices and fire, but this time there was a subtle difference, for this time they did not know what they were saying. The Holy Spirit was exploding deep within their spirits as they responded to the cry from heaven “will you become betrothed to me”, and their response soared and fell, “yes, yes, we will, we do”. For is that not what the power is for initially, to enable us to respond fully to our Lord’s desire, the longing of His heart for a bride.
Likewise here we see tongues of fire, wind, smoke, the same as at Mt Sinai, even voices, tongues in many languages. They knew what was happening for they knew the Torah.
Acts 2. They all spoke back, accepting the proposal, speaking in tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. This time though the Holy Spirit is helping them what to say, for the tongues was the bridal response. This was the birth of the Church, who is to be the bride of Christ, if the bride makes herself ready.
When God gave the Torah to Moses on Mt Sinai, the people were worshipping the golden calf.
As a result about 3,000 people died as punishment for their sins but when the Holy Spirit was given during Pentecost, the people repented, and about 3,000 people believed and received eternal life. In the wilderness God’s presence was symbolized by a cloud and fire, which led the Israelites out of Egypt. The Jehovah moved His presence into the Temple 2 Chron. 5:6,7 13,14
During Pentecost, Gods presence moved from the temple into a ‘new temple’, the followers of The Lord Jesus Christ. Rom. 8:9
Footnote: Deut 29:10-13 at Sinai they baulked at accepting the betrothal covenant. So Yaweh drew them to Himself, showing, teaching, line upon line, precept upon precept, for 40 yrs. At Pentecost He offers it again, and this time including the Gentiles, now He will woo them, He will romance their heart. The Spirit of God is going to reveal the loveliness of Christ Jesus that will allure and will conquer the people of God. Jesus will nourish and cherish His church, His people, the true church Eph 5:29 amongst whom there is going to be a revelation of Jesus where the people of God will call Him wonderful, and that is probably related to calling Him my husband. When Hosea spoke of a relationship so intimate with the Lord God Jehovah, so entirely foreign to anything any prophet had ever told the people of God prior to that. When Yahweh told Hosea to promise His people that He would allure them, He is talking about bringing natural Israel into the understanding of the gospel, in a specific way but it is not limited to that, for it is not limited to natural born Jews coming to Jesus, it also encompasses the activity of the Holy Spirit around the globe at the end of the age, for what God does through the redeemed that are Jewish, He will do through the redeemed that are not Jewish. The activity of the Spirit is being described, He will woo them/us, He will romance our heart, for we will need this. The Spirit of God is going to reveal the loveliness of Christ Jesus that will allure and will conquer the people of God. Eph 5:29
This was the birth of the Church, who is to be the bride of Christ, if the bride makes herself ready. If she enters into contract and keeps it. In the book of Ephesians 5:31 Paul is writing 4,000 years after Adam and Eve, and here Paul quotes Genesis 2:25
Eph. 5:31 For this cause/ reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.
In this entire chapter the apostle Paul is speaking of Christ and the Church, back and forth between a natural marriage by way of example and a spiritual marriage. Wives submit, a husband is the head, husbands love your wife and give yourself for her, in order to set her apart, back and forth, a natural illustration to explain a spiritual between Christ and His bride. Paul is using a midrash to enlarge on the book of Genesis chapters 1 and 2, where Adam and Eve enjoyed the intimacy of nakedness without shame. There in Genesis the Lord God put Adam to sleep, promising him a companion, He pierced His side, and out of His pierced side He brought forth a bride for Adam, and they were embracing one another without shame, in intimacy. Likewise from the time of Calvary the Lord God put His Son Jesus to sleep as it were where His side was pierced out of which flowed blood and water, which would in turn allow His wife to be embraced by Him naked without shame, in intimacy. The Book of Revelation talks of the streets being like glass, transparent, surely speaking of our able to be transparent without shame of intimacy. This is what the Lord has always been desiring, our intimacy with Him, transparency without shame because our filth is washed away.
The Lord said “for this cause, for this embrace, naked, unashamed, cleaving to one another, God established the institute of marriage for that ‘cause’, He would leave and cleave, for this cause, to establish intimacy without shame with us and produce a suitable companion for His Son.
Rev. 16:15 Behold I am coming as a thief. Blessed is he who watches, and keeps his garments, lest he walk naked and they see his shame.
Hebrew culture will enable us to understand this verse even clearer…..
During night duty the guards and watchmen of the city would be expected to stay awake, be alert, and do their duty. To ensure this was so the commander would take a stroll in the middle of the night. If he ever found a guard asleep that man would be immediately stripped of his clothes, and now ‘naked’ he would need to traverse the streets to his barracks, consequently everyone would ‘see his shame’.
Yes, intimacy of nakedness but without shame is what the Lord is wanting. Naked, but not due to carelessness and slothfulness, naked as in transparent, clothed with Him, His light, His righteousness.
May we approach this coming Sunday, Pentecost Sunday, with anticipation and excitement, ready to participate in this appointment the Lord has made between Himself and His Own.

MONTH OF ELUL:
2014 Gregorian calendar 27th Aug – 24th September
This month is known as the month of repentance as a prelude to next month, the last Feast.
1-30 days – on the first day the trumpet blasts and every consecutive day.
The trumpet would be blown staccato style to resemble sobbing.
The Lord is saying “repent before Yom Tarua/2nd day of the month of Tishrei, and if they do repent then they can enjoy the Feast of Trumpets.
If they failed to repent then they would experience instead loss and forfeit.
It is a time to turn from self-awareness to God awareness.
This month is traditionally a time of introspection and stocktaking, to prepare for the coming Days of Awe, the Feast of Tabernacles.
Psalms 27 is recited each day, until Yom Kippur.
The Book of Joel will help with understanding of what to repent for.
MONTH OF TISHRI:
Month of Tishri (usually October, although 2014 it commences 25 September)

Day One: THE FEAST OF TRUMPETS or the commencement of THE DAYS OF AWE or ROSH HASHANAH.
Everything in the Torah (or the Pentateuch, the Five Books of Moses) has a prophetic as well as an historical significance and merits our careful attention. Jesus indicated this in
Matthew 5:17: Think not that I am come to destroy the Torah, or the prophets, I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
Paul also emphasized this in
Romans 15:4 For whatsoever things were written afore-time were written for our learning. . .
This begins on the first day of Tishri (at the new moon) of the seventh month. Its name comes from the command to blow trumpets (Leviticus 23:24;Numbers 29:1-6). It is also called Rosh Hashanah, which means “Head of the Year,” because it marks the beginning of the Jewish civil calendar. This is the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashana and lasts 2 days.
The blowing of the trumpets on first and second day of the month heralded a solemn time of
preparation for The Day of Atonement; this preparation time was called “Ten Days of
Repentance” or the “Days of Awe.” The trumpet sound was an alarm of sorts, 90 blasts in total,
and can be understood as a call to introspection and repentance. Remember that they had just
completed one month of repentance, now they have an extra concentrated intense ten days, just
to make certain, because obviously it is so very serious.
Day one and day two is called ‘one long day’ or ‘2 days long’ or ‘the day you don’t know the hour or day thereof’, and there is an obvious reason for this, but there is also a hidden meaning. Firstly the obvious meaning, two priests would wait together watching for the new moon, they were never sure which day it would appear, now to the hidden meaning for did not Jesus say that He did not know the day nor the hour when He would return. Once these two priests both agreed that the new moon was in place they would instruct the trumpeter, who would make a long blast on his trumpet, this was the final trumpet, again a hidden truth for Jesus will return when the last trumpet sounds. This signals the Jewish New Year. This trumpet call is named ‘the awakening blast’. The New Year is named Yom (day) Tarua.
The Feast of Trumpets marked the beginning of ten days of consecration and repentance before God. It is one of seven Jewish feasts or festivals appointed by the LORD and one of three feasts that occur in the autumn. During this celebration, no kind of work was to be performed, but burnt offerings and a sin offering were to be brought before the Lord.
In the Leviticus passage, the word trumpet is a translation of the Hebrew word hhatsoho-tserah. This designated a straight trumpet, or cornet, in contrast with the shoh-phar, or ram’s horn. But it appears that the shofar was also blown at this time, as it was on the other new moons (Psalm 81:3). Jewish tradition indicates that both kinds of horns were used in the Feast of Trumpets for it is a festival of trumpet blowing.
SEVEN DAYS OF AFFLICTION:
In anticipation of Yom Kippur to come.
THE 7th DAY OF THE FEAST OF TRUMPETS
John 7:2, Now the Jews Feast of Tabernacles was at hand. His brothers therefore said to Him, “Depart from here and go into Judea that your disciples also may see the works that you are doing. For no one does anything in secret while he himself seeks to be known openly. If you do these things, show yourself to the world
This is the conversation his natural brothers held with Him, for they did not believe in Him at all. Jesus responded by encouraging them to go up for the feast without Him. Later, when His brothers had departed for Jerusalem Jesus left separately.
vs. 11 The Jews sought Him at the feast.
vs. 12 The people were looking although divided in their opinion of who He was.
vs. 19, 30, 32 The leaders sought for Him so that they could attempt yet again to kill Him.
vs. 30 There were many that believed on Him when they heard His teaching.
Everyone was looking for Him and speaking of Him but all very undercover and secret, for there was nervousness about them, out of fear of the Jewish leaders. In the middle of the feast, when festivities had reached its height, He appeared in the Temple, His Father’s house. Going to the Temple porch where the Rabbis taught, He calmly seated Himself and began to teach. Every day after wards He went to the Temple but now there was confusion. The leaders feared to take Him for fear of the people, equally the people feared to accept Him through fear of the leaders.
On two occasions officers were sent to take Him, but it was not time, and so once again He slipped out of sight. This ‘escaping through the midst’ had become a pattern, one worth examining.
Matt. 21:46 But when they sought to lay hands on Him, they feared the multitudes.
Mark 3:21 But when His own people heard about this, they went out to lay hold of Him, for they said, “He is out of His mind”.
John 7:30 They sought to take Him; but no one laid a hand on Him, because His hour had not yet come.
John 7:44 Now some of them wanted to take Him, but no one laid hands on Him.
To understand what was happening on each of these occasions we need to look back in the Old Testament to the instigation of the sacrificial offering.
Lev. 1:1-4. …..let him offer a male without blemish; he shall offer it of his own free will at the door of the tabernacle of the meeting, before the Lord. Then he shall put his hand on the head of the burnt offering and it will be accepted on his behalf to make atonement for him.
In many instances this was to be the pattern. The ‘offerer’, who is the sinner, was to lay his hands upon the sacrifice as he handed it over to the priest who would then kill the lamb. At the time of laying hands upon the lamb that lamb took upon itself the sins of the ‘offerer’. No one could lay their hands upon Jesus before it was time. In the garden when the soldiers took Jesus and laid their hands upon Jesus, at that moment He took upon Himself the sins of mankind, as the Lamb of God. Then He was handed over to the priest who sacrificed Him. Jesus was the fulfilment.
Back to the Feast of Tabernacles,
a. On the 7th day of the feast the priests went out with music and the choir of Levites.
b. A great procession marched 7 times around the city the air filled with singing Hallelujahs, the air was filled with the voice of choirs, singing the great Hallel that is Ps. 113-118 in commemoration of the taking of the city of Jericho and thereafter the Promised Land.
c. As the enormous column completed circling the city for the seventh time they made their way, still in procession, to the brook of Siloam to draw water in a golden vessel from the spring of Siloam to be poured out at the time of the morning offering amidst great joy, singing and dancing. They go down to the pool to cast their sins into the water.
The beauty of the enacting of that verse in Isaiah every year throughout their lives makes the fulfilment more impacting. The Jews were very visual. Here they are each year living out the drama but failing to see that it was fulfilled in Jesus. Now we come to Him
Nearing the brook their song began to change. Now the chant from Isaiah the prophet fills the air.
Isai 12:3; 43:20; 44:3. Ho everyone that thirsts come to the waters and drink. With joy you shall draw water out of the wells of salvation.
The air was filled with the quotation from Isaiah, year after year the same pattern, every man and boy from the age of 13, encouraged themselves with the words of Isaiah. Taking water from the Brook of Siloam the priests carried the water back to the Temple Mount where they poured it over the pavement, as they waited for the joy promised them by Isaiah. For the first time Jesus did not join Himself to the procession. Remaining on the steps of the Temple He watched. Finally with a loud voice, which carried to the shuffling crowds, He shouted
Yes, Jesus was the fulfilment of all they had been waiting for, but they failed to see and accept and still continue to quote Isaiah’s prophecy as they drink and wait for the fulfilment. That day the procession continued its weary way towards the water that would never satisfy them, passing by the Living Water which could satisfy them for eternity.
The day following….
John 8:2,3. Early in the morning He came again into the temple, and all the people came to Him and He sat down and taught them. Then the scribes and Pharisees brought to Him a woman caught in adultery, in the very act.
The following day Jesus returned to the Temple. Whilst He was teaching the Scribes and Pharisees brought a woman to Him. It was custom in cases of difficulty to consult a famous Rabbi. A crowd had gathered around Jesus therefore this seemed the perfect moment to trap Him. If He condemned her to stoning it would injure Him in the eyes of the people, for the Law had long been obsolete in this matter. On the other hand if He simply dismissed her, they could charge Him with slighting the Law.
In silence Jesus bent down and began to write with His finger in the dust. The Bible does not enlighten us as to what He wrote but it was probably the Law in the form of the Ten Commandments. For as the onlookers read His writing in the dust it must have been as though they were stripped naked, as though everyone knew their secrets. For there was a part of that Law which condemned each and every one of her accusers, until one by one, feeling very exposed, they slipped out of the crowd. They surely understood what He was writing but totally missed why He was writing.
With His finger He wrote the Law, just as he had done once before upon Mt. Sinai Leaving them in doubt at all He then underscored His action by finally saying,
John 8:58 Before Abraham was, I am”. And they picked up stones to kill Him.
He was showing them and telling them that He was God, the one and the same who had written the Law on Mt. Sinai.
To be ready for Jesus coming we need to put the trumpet to our mouth.
The Jews were not ready for Jesus FIRST COMING, their Messiah because they did not understand the spring holidays.
We cannot be ready for Jesus SECOND COMING if we do not understand the autumn holidays.
Not the holidays themselves, for we are not under the law, but the PRINCIPLE
THE 10TH DAY OF THE FEAST OF TRUMPETS/TABERNACLES. YOM KIPPUR.
THE DAY OF ATONEMENT:
Note: At the time of writing the date is 3/10/2014 which means that at 6pm the Day of
Atonement commences, lasting for 24 hours, a day of fasting and being one with the Lord. It will
either prove to be another ‘dress rehearsal’, which makes it no less important for us, or the Lord
will return for His Bride, which will be of ultimate importance for us.
This day falls on the tenth day of this month of Tishri, and the Festival of Booths will begin on
the 15th day. The Feast of Trumpets, along with the other six festivals of the LORD,
foreshadowed certain aspects of the ministry of Jesus Christ. The prophets linked the blowing of
trumpets to the future.
Day of Judgment: “Blow the trumpet in Zion; sound the alarm on my holy hill. Let all who live
in the land tremble, for the day of the LORD is coming. It is close at hand” (Joel 2:1; see
In the New Testament, we see that the Lord’s Second Coming will be accompanied by the sound
Revelation 8-9 is also signalled by a trumpet. Just as the shofar called the Jewish nation to turn
their attention to the Lord and ready themselves for the Day of Atonement, so will the “trump of
God” call us to heaven and warn the world of coming judgment.
Jesus said “I go to prepare a place for you, when I return I will take you to myself. I do not know the day or hour, only my Father in heaven knows that”.
1 Thess. 4:16 the Lord will descend …..with the trumpet of God. The dead in Christ shall arise first. Then we shall be caught up….in the clouds….to meet the Lord in the air….and we shall always be with Him.
To catch you up to myself – harpudzio – parousia – rapture. Some believe that the rapture will be before the trouble, others believe that it will come in the midst of the trouble and yet others believe it will come at the end, but whenever it comes, it will come, and we shall be caught up to meet Him.
THE JEWISH MARRIAGE:
From that time of betrothal she veils her face, she is ‘in hiding’.
The Holy Spirit is given to us John 14:26 to teach us about the Messiah
The veil on us now is called ‘the presence of God’.
People should be able to see us and tell that we have been set apart to God.
The season before The Day of Atonement is called ‘the day of the hiding’.
It is the hidden day the hiding place as being also called the closet.
No one knows the day of the wedding, only the Father knows it.
The day is hidden = veiled, as are we. He takes the veil off on the day.
Cor. 13:9-12 we shall see Him face to face – this expression is an idiom for Yom Kippur
on this festival each individual had to search himself
The High Priest went beyond the veil
At that moment the High Priest was face to face.
Wonderfully the Bible is all about a marriage. It commences with a marriage in the Garden of Eden and closes in the Book of Revelation with a marriage, this time between Christ and His bride. The Bible says that ‘first in the natural and then in the spiritual’, therefore taking a natural marriage as it was in the Old Testament Hebrew life, and then see the spiritual parallels. Betrothal which is a similar idea to our engagement with many differences, can take place many years before the marriage. This is where they covenant together in a betrothal ceremony to prepare themselves for the future wedding day, exchanging gifts of something of value maybe even a ring, a document of betrothal is written an agreement which sets out details of what is expected from each other. There is a big difference between a ‘promise’ and a ‘betrothal’. A promise can be broken but not so a betrothal, for with the breaking of the latter it would be considered a divorcement and needing the appropriate conditions and permission. The only difference that demarks a betrothal from a marriage is that during the betrothal period there is no consummation, for they do not enter into physical relations.
Now that they are betrothed yet apart there is someone now, selected by the man’s family, who plays a very important role. He is the intermediary, for he is the messenger who constantly plies between the couple bearing gifts or messages. Often he was called upon to keep the anticipation and love alive, portraying the desires of each partner. This important person is known as ‘the friend of the bridegroom’. John the Baptist named himself the friend of the Bridegroom as forerunner to the Lord Jesus Christ for John’s ministry was to prepare Israel, the bride to be, for the Lord, whereas the Holy Spirit in now the Friend of the Bridegroom as He prepares us to meet our husband to be, the Lord Jesus Christ.
Now to the marriage day as understood within the Hebrew culture. Just prior to midnight a procession would depart from the groom’s house. The groom together with his male friends would then make their way through the darkened streets to the bride’s house. For this occasion the groom would be dressed as much like a king as possible with a garland of fresh flowers around his neck and a crown upon his head. His clothes would be scented with frankincense and myrrh. As they walked through the streets the grooms friends would be blowing the trumpet singing, dancing and making so much noise that everyone in the vicinity were alerted to the fact that a marriage was about to take place. With the time so close to midnight the streets would be in black darkness with the only light coming from the lanterns carried by those who accompanied the groom, and the groom himself.
Meanwhile the bride not knowing the exact day her husband to be would arrive had been preparing herself. There were probably countless trial runs when she dressed in her bridal clothes and waited at the closed door. The friend of the Bridegroom would have alerted her that time was very near, that the feast was prepared, the guests even were beginning to gather, and it was simply waiting for the father to release his son. Dressed in her bridal clothes she too was dressed as a queen, her friends were surrounding her and each either carried a lantern with extra oil or a musical instrument, ready to escort her through the dark streets in the procession.
Walking back through those streets together the couple would be separated from their friends and the merriment by walking together beneath a canopy, and locked in one another’s love. For this and only this occasion, the girl had covered her face with a veil, and as he looked into her eyes the groom and indeed the guests were unable to see the beauty that was promised.
The banquet was prepared back at the groom’s father’s house and the guests were invited and gathered ready. Each guest had been provided with a fitting wedding garment to wear for the celebration, this way the father was ensuring that the groom and his bride would not be insulted or demeaned by the condition or apparel of some of the guests. The guests and feast was waiting and the father was standing waiting at the open door ready to welcome the couple.
As the procession arrived they entered through the doors which were then locked behind them. To one side of the room two thrones had been arranged, and to these the groom led his bride. Now seated and with the canopy raised over them and before the feast began the groom had one more duty to carry out. He reaches across and without saying a word he unhooks the veil from off her face. First one side and then the other is unhooked, now with the veil removed those gathered can see her beauty and acknowledge the full beauty that has been blossoming, unseen all this time. Fully satisfied he now, still without speaking a word for she understood the custom, he entirely removed the veil and laid it across his right shoulder, this way he is saying to her and to the guests ‘all the things that life brings that has been used to prepare her for this day, I take responsibility for everything’. Now the feast can begin but rather than be involved in the partying the couple depart to a side room and the marriage is consummated. Now it is left to us to take each and every part of that demonstration from beginning to end and overlay it piece by piece, movement by movement upon that which is and will happen as Christ prepares and finally comes for His bride. This will happen one year in the near future, but on this day, The Day of Atonement.
THE MORNING SERVICE:
Although the Jewish day begins at sunset, the Temple service did not begin until dawn the next morning.
The ashes on the altar were cleared away, and 4 fires, instead of the normal 3, were lit to set the day apart as distinct from any other.
On any other day the priest would merely wash his hands and feet at the laver. On this day he was required to immerse himself in a special golden bath. Now he dressed in special clothes, a purple robe, hemmed with tiny golden bells. Over the top he wore a golden breastplate. After dressing he washed his hands and feet, to perform the regular service. Following the service he returned to his bath chamber to change into his white linen garments. Five times during the day he changed his clothing, and 5 times he followed the cleansing procedure. Each time, he washed his hands and feet, removed his garments, immersed totally, put on his change of clothes, washed his hands and feet again.
This is the main focus of the feast.
The High Priest moved to the Court of the Priests where a young bull awaited him between the altar and the Temple porch, the bull is known as a red heifer, which is another interesting story I itself.
Since this bull was the sin offering for the high priest and the priesthood, the ceremony took place near the Temple where the priests ministered. The high priest would press his two hands upon the head of the young bull, signifying, as he confessed his sins that the bull was to become the substitute.
More sacrificing took place....
Remove the Distractions

“This is to be a lasting ordinance for you: On the tenth day of the seventh month you must deny yourselves and not do any work —whether native-born or a foreigner residing among you.” — Leviticus 16:29
A note to our readers: This week marks the continuation of the ten days between the start of Rosh Hashanah and ending with Yom Kippur, known as the Days of Awe or Days of Repentance. It is a time of serious introspection in preparation for Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, and the holiest day of the Jewish calendar. Our devotions throughout this week are tied to this biblically mandated observance.
A story is told about the grandson of a great rabbi who came to his grandfather in tears. The young boy was playing hide and seek with his friends when it was his turn to hide. He found a good hiding place and waited and waited, but nobody came to find him. After a long time, the boy came out of his hiding spot and found that his friends had gotten distracted by another game and forgot all about him. He cried to his grandfather, “I hid, but no one looked for me!”
Upon hearing his grandson’s words, the rabbi’s eyes filled with tears as well. He said, “That’s how God must feel, too! He is hiding in our world, just beneath the surface. But we are too distracted to look for Him! God wants us to seek Him and find Him, but people are so busy that they forget all about Him!”
On Yom Kippur, the Bible instructs us to “deny ourselves.” In the Jewish tradition, this refers to five specific restraints: we don’t eat or drink, wash our bodies, beautify ourselves with creams and cosmetics, engage in marital relations, or wear leather shoes. Why are these denials an integral part of this holy day?
One reason for these restraints is so that we can focus on the goal of the day: To connect with God, regret our mistakes, and regain clarity on our lives. All yearlong we are distracted by the physical pleasures of the world. On Yom Kippur, we take away those physical impediments so that we are forced to focus directly on our lives. We can’t hide behind a good latte or a new pair of shoes. We see life for what it is – a chance to serve God and do good. We remember that God is present in all ways and at all times, and we remember to seek Him out.
In Israel, there is a term of endearment that has always spoken to me. Both secular Israelis and observant ones alike use the term neshama whether talking to a stranger, a relative, or close friend. It means “soul.” What a beautiful way to refer to each other! We are souls and we inhabit a body the same way that a person drives a car. We are not our car and we are not our bodies; we are souls. On Yom Kippur, we remove the physical distractions and remember who — and what — we really are.
During this week, let’s focus on God and let physicality take a back seat. Consider how we can reveal more godliness in our lives and live a life that fills our souls.

FESTIVAL OF BOOTHS. SUCCOTT:
This is the Feast of Tabernacles held from the 15th – 22nd of the month of Tishrei, commemorating in part the tent life of the Israelites, plus giving thanks for the harvest. Everyone lived during the feast in the streets or in courtyards or out on the roofs of houses, in shelters of living twigs, branches of olive, myrtle, and fir built into booths.. The first and last day of the feast fell on a Sabbath, the feast lasting seven days. On the evening of the first day the huge candelabra was lit to shine its light over the city for the week of festivities. The courtyard was filled from dawn to dusk with men dancing and singing. Meanwhile in Jerusalem everyone is looking for Him.
THE FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS:
There is a ceremony in the Temple that gives us an insight. But it is only seen in the Hebrew language/version. It means ‘the house of the water pouring’.
During the feast of Succot, 4 great poles were placed in the court of the women, a huge lamp was hung from each pole, each lamp contained 4 vats of oil to light it. With a separate attendant for each light, the wicks were made from the old undergarments of the priests, called swaddling clothes
Each day in the Temple was a special ceremony, priests were divided into 3 divisions
Division 1 the priests on duty for preparing and sacrificing the animals
Division 2 This division went to the valley where they took the ashes from the Temple altar. The priests would cut down willow trees 25 feet in length.
Then they would take one willow each and make columns in line.
Each line stood 25 feet apart from the row in front, and holding the willow in front of them, then they would begin to walk.
The whole road back to the Temple was lined with pilgrims. At a signal each priest would take a step together, left foot first, then to the right foot. As they walked they would swing the willows left, right, making a swishing noise. The word for spirit is ruach, it means wind, as the priests walked dragging the willow it sounding like a wind approaching the city
Division 3 The High Priest and his assistant departed through the water gate, and went to the pool of Siloam. The High Priest with a golden vase drew water out of the pool,
Just as the priests in the valley of ashes began to walk back, so the 3rd group began the journey back to their gate. As each party reached their respective gates a shofar was blown, a single shofar. And a single man would stand and play a flute. The pilgrims coming up for the feast, they had to make a ceremony, you didn’t just pack and go to Jerusalem. Village by village there were calls echoing ‘come and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord”. The flutist was the one who led them, In Hebrew flute – halah – pierced one. The pierced one led the people to the festival, blows the call for the wind and the water to enter into the Temple. Now inside the Temple
and all the people are gathered in the court singing the sing ‘with joy shall we draw water out of the wells of salvation. The High Priest pours the water over the altar, and then wine

THE TORAH IS SO RICH IN PICTURES MAKING THE TRUTHS OF GOD LIVING
WE ON THE OTHER HAND CAN BECOME SO GLIB BECAUSE JESUS HAS FULFILLED ALL UNTIL WE MISS EVERYTHING, AND MANY ARE DULL AND BORED.
Even as the Jews failed to understand the drama that was playing out before them even so we too can get caught up in visual without seeing the underlying mystery.
THE NIGHT WATCHERS:
By day and night it was the duty of the Levites to keep guard at the gates, to prevent so far as was possible the unclean from entering. To them the duties of the Temple police were also entrusted under the command of an official known to us in the New Testament as the ‘captain of the Temple’ Acts 4:1 but in Jewish writings chiefly as ‘the man of the Temple Mount’. The office must have been of considerable responsibility, considering the multitudes on feast-days, and the potential for an uprising, and the close proximity of the hated Romans. At night guards were placed in 24 stations about the gates and the courts. Each guard consisted of 10 men, so that in all 240 Levites and 30 priests were on duty every night. The Temple guards were divided into 4 watches, the 4th being the morning watch. Hence when the Lord said ‘blessed are those servants whom the Lord when He comes shall find watching” He is expressly referring to the 2nd and 3rd watches as those of deepest sleep Luke 12:38
THE ROUND OF THE CAPTAIN:
During the night the captain of the Temple made his rounds. On his approach the guards had to rise and salute him in a particular manner. Any guard found asleep when on duty was beaten, or his garments were set on fire, punishment. Rev. 16:15 Blessed is he that watches and keeps his garments. No one knew what hour the captain would come and knock on the door. The Rabbis use almost the very words in which the Scriptures describes the unexpected coming of the Master, Mark 13:35 when they say “Sometimes they came at the cock crowing sometimes a little earlier, sometimes a little later”.
The warning to us is to be awake, otherwise the danger will be for us to lose our garments/our covering, and even in danger of the fires of punishment
THE YEAR OF THE SHEMITAR:
The mystery of the Shemitah.
The Shemitah bears witness that the land and the earth belong to God and have only been entrusted to man as steward. If man turned away from God then the blessings which belonged to God would be removed. To keep that year was an acknowledgment to God’s sovereignty and required man’s total trust. Israel did not keep this for 70 Sabbaths, 70x7 therefore they were forced into keeping them in 586BC. when everything was taken from them, even the kingdom itself.
The Shemitah is the Sabbath of years, the year of rest, of stillness, of total reliance upon Jehovah. In the Old Testament forgetting God by not keeping the Shemitar caused a collapse of the nation, today we have already forgotten God and therefore a Shemitar year signifies an imminent/possible collapse.
Shemitah is always linked to
Lev. 25 The Sabbath year. Vs 18-20, the economy
2 Chron links it with cataclysms. Captivity 586 was a Shemitah year. Once Israel kept the Shemitah then the captivity was over.
In modern times how does it work? As a nation we are already under judgment due to turning our backs on our Creator. Therefore a Shemitah year will always bring judgment unless we return to God.
USA is a nation specifically established after the pattern of ancient Israel.
They began to turn from God, even as did ancient Israel. They redefined right and wrong. They call evil good and good evil. God is removed from its national life, its culture, its government, Prayer and the Bible removed from schools, forces, government. As did Israel when they offered their children to Molech, so USA have killed millions of unborn children on the altars of convenience and pleasure.
All invoking the judgment of the Shemitah and there are signs or harbingers.
Day One of the Feast of Tabernacles is known as Yom Ha Din, The Day of Judgment. Blow the shofar, the alarm, call a solemn gathering there is approaching danger, impending judgment.
Tishrei is the month of reckoning. The Ten days of Awe, The Days of Repentance.
Shemitah is based upon the civil calendar and begins Day One of Tishrei and concluded Elul 29, building momentum, far worse at end.

Note: The mystery of the Shemitah is that it centres on one day above another, the Day of Nullification which is the very last day of Israel’s year, Elul 29, the day in OT when financial accounts are wiped away. Therefore the biggest financial crash in US history fell not only on Elul 29 but on the one that only comes around every 7 years.
2008 Shemitah year the greatest stock market crash in world history on Elul 29. The Day of Nullification, causing a recession.

Let us rejoice at how clearly our Lord has laid it all out for us, albeit hidden and neediing us to seek out. Now is the time like never before to walk very closely with the Lord.
